Cargo Traffic:

 

SMP, Kolkata reached a new high in 2022-23 with the Port handling 65.660 million tonnes (MT) of cargotraffic, vis-à-vis 58.175MT handled during 2021-22, an all-time record in the Port’s 152-year-history, surpassing the previous highest of 63.983 MT handled in 2019-20,clocking a robust increase of 12.87% over the previous year. SMPK got elevated from 6th to 5th position in cargo    handling amongst the Major Ports in 2022-23 vis-à-vis 2021-22.

 

  • SMPK recorded highest ever absolute growth of traffic w.r.t. previous year during 2022-23 (7.485 MT) surpassing the previous highest of 6.94 MT achieved in 2017-18.
  • In 2022-23, HDC handled 48.608 MMT cargo, incidentally the highest ever since its inception, registering a rise of 13.37% over the previous year's handling of 42.877 MMT and surpassing its earlier record of 46.68 MMT in 2019-20. KDS handled 17.052 MT of cargo in 2022-23 vis-à-vis 15.298 MT in 2021-22 with an improvement of 11.47%. Incidentally, KDS’s highest handling of traffic was in 2018-19, when it registered 18.551 MMT of Cargo.
  • SMPK surpassed the Ministry’s target of 61 MMT for 2022-23 collectively and individually at both its twin dock systems viz. HDC (44.5 MT on 3.3.2023) and KDS (16.50 MT on 22.3.2023).

Comparative Performance:

    Comparative performance of SMP,Kolkata in 2022-23 in respect of the following commodities, vis-a-vis other Indian Major Ports, deserves special mention: -

 

Coking Coal/ Other Coal

  • SMP, Kolkata ranked 1st in terms of Coking Coal & Other Coal handling amongst Major Ports of India.

Other Liquid Cargo

  • SMP, Kolkata ranked 2nd in Other Liquid Cargoamongst Major Ports.


 

3090 vessels called the Port during 2022-23 vis-à-vis 2957 in 2021-22 registering an increase of 4.5%. SMP, Kolkata emerged 3rd highest regarding number of vessel calls at the Port during 2022-23, catering to about 13.76% of the total number of vessels which worked at the Indian Major Ports in the year under review.

 

Container Traffic:

 SMP, Kolkata ranked 5th in 2022-23 amongst Indian Major Ports in handling Container TEUs. During 2022-23, 6,75,904 Container TEUs were handled at the Port vis-à-vis 7,35,195 TEUs during 2021-22. Total Containerised tonnage handled at SMP, Kolkata was 10.59 million tonnes in 2022-23 vis-à-vis 11.8 million tonnes in 2021-22.

KDS handled 5,68,722 TEUs in 2022-23 compared to 5,69,783 TEUs in 2021-22, recording a marginal decline. In 2019-20 KDS achieved the highest ever container throughput of 6,75,439 TEUs. HDC handled 1,07,182 TEUs in 2022-23 vis-a-vis 1,65,412 TEUs in 2021-22.

 

     Vessel Traffic :

 

    In 2022-23, 3056 merchant vessels left KDS and HDC with gross registered tonnage of 711 lakh tonnes, vis-a-vis 2942 vessels with gross registered tonnage of 646 lakh tonnes in 2021-22. At KDS, 1092 and at HDC, 1964 vessels left after cargo operation in 2022-23.
